Backyard Rules of Fricket
Summary
Fricket is a backyard game played outdoors by two teams of one or two persons each.
Each team takes alternating turns attempting to knock a bottle off the other team’s pole with a disc.
Points are awarded to the throwing team. Members of the receiving team work together to catch the bottle and the disc, thereby preventing their opponents from scoring.
Field
The Fricket playing field can be setup in your backyard, in a tailgating parking lot, on the sand at the beach, or just about anywhere outdoors.
The field consists of two vertical poles placed about 40 feet apart.
Mark an 8-foot line with the pole at its center as the throw line. Place an empty bottle on top of each pole.
During play, all team members must stand behind their respective pole and keep all body parts behind the throw line.
Scoring
- The throwers earn one point if the receivers fail to catch a reasonably thrown disc that passes across the throw line while the bottle stays in place. If the receivers catch the disc, no points are scored.
- The throwers earn two points if the receivers catch the disc, but the bottle hits the ground.
- The throwers earn three points if the disc and the bottle hit the ground.
- No points are awarded for a disc that does not cross the throw line.
- No points are awarded for a disc that crosses the throw line below the one foot high.
- Causing your own bottle to fall while attempting a catch awards two or three points to the throwers.
Play
- During play, all players must hold a drink in one hand at all times, whether throwing or receiving.
- Each team alternates throwing the disc at the opposing team’s poles in an attempt to dislodge their bottle.
- Each player must alternate throwing the disc. No player can refuse to throw the disc on his or her turn.
- Any type of throw is permitted as long as the thrower does not cross the throw line before releasing the disc.
- Receiving players are allowed to take any position in anticipation of the throw as long as all body parts stay behind the throw line. When receiving, either player may attempt to catch the disc and/or the bottle.
- Receiving players may not touch the disc until after it has crossed their throw line.
